Arizona Wildcats (19-13) vs Utah
Utes (21-9) – Midwest Region, Miami Florida
Arizona might be the most controversial at-large
selection to the NCAA Tournament this season, but the Wildcats don't care.
Arizona parlayed a few key wins into yet another NCAA Tournament berth, despite
finishing only .500 in the Pacific 10 Conference and tying for fifth. Even more
surprisingly, Arizona was selected for the NCAA Tournament despite losing five
of its last six games. Arizona did not beat a team inside the Top 100 of the RPI
after Feb. 14, yet received an at-large bid. The Wildcats took full advantage of
key wins throughout the season, including an 84-72 win against UCLA, a 106-97
win against Pac-10 regular-season champion Washington, an 84-67 win against Big
12 regular-season champion Kansas, and a 69-64 win against WCC champion Gonzaga.
Arizona's non-conference schedule was especially strong, consisting of five Top
50 RPI teams and eight Top 100 RPI teams. Arizona finished 6-10 against the RPI
Top 50. The Wildcats rely on 6-foot-10 junior Jordan Hill, who leads them with
18.5 points per game and 11.0 rebounds. Another inside player, 6-7 junior Chase
Budinger, scores 17.9 points per game while adding 6.3 rebounds. Arizona did put
together a season-high seven-game win streak in late January and early February,
picking up three wins against Top 40 RPI teams in the process. Arizona was a
dismal 2-9 in true road games this season, winning only at Oregon and Oregon
State. BEST WINS: 84-67 vs. Kansas; 106-97 vs. Washington; 69-64 vs. Gonzaga;
84-72 vs. UCLA. WORST LOSSES: 69-53 at Washington State; 76-60 at Stanford;
79-64 at UNLV.

appeared poised to claim the Mountain West Conference regular-season outright
championship heading into the next-to-last weekend of the regular season.
However, the Utes dropped back-to-back road games at BYU and New Mexico,
allowing the Cougars and Lobos to pull into a three-way tie for the
regular-season league championship. Utah had won eight straight games before
losing to BYU and New Mexico, but the Utes won their regular-season finale at
home against TCU, 68-49, to clinch a share of the title. Four different Utah
players score at least 10.6 points per game, led by frontcourt star Luke Nevill,
a 7-foot-2 senior from Australia, who averages 16.9 points, 8.9 rebounds, and
2.7 blocks per game. Nevill shoots 60.5% from the field and 79.3% from the
free-throw line. Utah played a strong non-conference schedule, defeating
Gonzaga, 66-65; LSU, 91-61; and Mississippi, 83-72. The Utes also lost
non-conference games against California, 72-69; at Oklahoma, 70-52; and at Utah
State, 66-64. The loss to Cal was Utah's only home-court loss this season.
However, the Utes were nowhere near as strong on the road this season, posting a
6-7 record. Utah was 4-5 against RPI Top 50 teams this season and 8-7 against
RPI Top 100 teams. The Utes suffered only one loss to a team outside the RPI Top
100, a 72-68 loss at Idaho State in early December. Utah has not been in the
NCAA Tournament since 2005. BEST WINS: 94-88 vs. BYU; 66-65 vs. Gonzaga; 91-61
vs. LSU; 69-68 vs. New Mexico. WORST LOSSES: 72-68 at Idaho State; 72-63 at San
Diego State; 75-65 at UNLV
