Steelers vs Chargers NFL Week 5 Monday Night Football Pick

After a strong offensive start to the NFL season, an injury to Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has left his team floundering a bit heading into the Monday Night Football Steelers-Chargers game. Pittsburgh will carry a 2-2 record into the MNF Steelers-Chargers game on ESPN at 8:30 p.m. Eastern at Qualcomm Stadium.

Pittsburgh opened with a competitive loss against New England, 28-21, before winning against San Francisco, 43-18. But Pittsburgh will enter the Steelers-Chargers game with some frustration on offense after a 12-6 win against St. Louis, during which Roethlisberger was injured, and a 23-20 overtime loss to Baltimore.

In light of last Thursdays disastrous overtime loss to Baltimore, when Josh Scobee of the Steelers missed two field goals late in the fourth quarter, and Pittsburgh then chose to attempt fourth down conversions twice in overtime, rather than trying another field goal, Pittsburgh will have a new kicker for the Steelers-Chargers game. Pittsburgh will give Chris Boswell the start at place-kicker for the Steelers-Chargers game. Boswell is a kicker out of Rice who has never attempted a kick in a regular-season NFL game.

San Diego nearly had a similar place-kicking problem to Pittsburgh. In the Week 4 tune-up for the Steelers-Chargers game, San Diego and Cleveland were tied at 27 with 3 seconds left. Chargers rookie kicker Josh Lambo missed the game-winning field goal, but a penalty against Cleveland gave Lambo another chance, and he made it for the 30-27 San Diego win. That win pushed San Diegos record to 2-2 entering the Steelers-Chargers game.

Beyond the place-kickers, San Diego should have the advantage at the quarterback spot in the Steelers-Chargers game. San Diego veteran quarterback Philip Rivers has thrown for 1,248 yards in four games with eight touchdowns. While the four interceptions Rivers has thrown this season are concerning, he had a 3-to-0 touchdown-to-interception ratio in the Week 4 game against Cleveland.

In one-plus games as Pittsburghs replacement for Roethlisberger at starting quarterback, Michael Vick has 162 yards passing with one touchdown. He has rushed for 28 yards. LeVeon Bell has played in two games at the running back position entering the Steelers-Chargers game, recording 191 yards on the ground with two scores.

Pittsburgh has dominated the all-time Steelers-Chargers series, 21-7. However, the Steelers and Chargers have not played in San Diego since 2006, when San Diego won, 23-13. San Diego also won the last Steelers-Chargers game in Pittsburgh in 2012, 34-24.
