 Pointspread - St. Louis-1 under/over 41.5

Two offenses that haven’t shown much in the NFL season will look to get on track in Sunday’s Lions-Rams contest.

FOX has a regional TV broadcast of the Lions and Rams from the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis at 1 p.m. Eastern Sunday.

Both Detroit and St. Louis are all but out of the playoff chase in 2015. The Rams have collapsed with five straight losses after a surprising 4-3 start, while Detroit’s longshot playoff hopes, which were fueled by a three-game win streak, disappeared after the Lions were the victim of a game-winning Hail Mary touchdown last Thursday against Green Bay.

Offense likely will be in short supply in the Lions-Rams game. St. Louis had an average offense at best through the first half of the NFL season, but it really struggled of late. St. Louis has scored only 54 points in its last five games and has only four touchdowns in its past four games. The Rams are 4-0 when scoring 24 points or more this season and 0-8 when scoring fewer than 24 points.

Rams rookie running back Todd Gurley had a strong first half of the season, posting four consecutive 100-plus-yard rushing games, and St. Louis won three of those four. But in the five-game Rams losing streak, he has no 100-yard rushing performances.

Detroit appeared as though it would enter the Lions-Rams game on a four-game win streak with an outside shot of winning out for a playoff berth. However, Green Bay’s 61-yard Hail Mary touchdown pass on an extra untimed down after a Detroit penalty kept the game alive last Thursday resulted in a 27-23 Lions loss. Both Detroit and St. Louis have identical 4-8 records.

The Lions have scored 20 or more points only four times, and they’ve lost two of those games. Detroit is 2-6 when scoring 19 or fewer points. Detroit has struggled to get its running game going, as the Lions have not had an individual rusher post a 100-yard game yet this season, even though rookie Ameer Abdullah has given Detroit some nice performances. Even more alarming, star wide receiver Calvin Johnson has only one 100-yard receiving game this season.

The Lions-Rams series dates back to 1937 with St. Louis leading 42-40-1 all-time. The two teams have split their last 16 meetings.
