New Orleans Pelicans vs Houston Rockets Free NBA Pick

Two of the NBA's most disappointing teams thus far in 2015-16 will be part of a national NBATV double-header broadcast in Wednesday's Pelicans-Rockets game at 8 p.m.

The Pelicans and Rockets will be the first game of the double header on NBATV from Houston. Both New Orleans and the Rockets were in the playoffs last season, but they have both started with well below .500 records in the first month of this season.

Houston was the number two seed in the Western Conference playoffs last season and was hoping to build on that in 2015-16. But Houston has been one of the NBA's worst teams in the first month of the season heading into the Pelicans-Rockets contest.

The Rockets won only four of their first 11 games in the season, leading to the firing of Coach Kevin McHale in mid-November. And while Houston was able to defeat Portland in overtime in its first game after McHale's firing, it won't be carrying much momentum from the coaching change into the Pelicans-Rockets game, as Houston lost three straight after winning in Portland.

Things aren't any better for New Orleans leading up to the Pelicans-Rockets contest. New Orleans was the number eight seed in last season's NBA Western Conference playoffs with 45 wins, but the Pelicans opened this season winning only one of their first 12 games.

New Orleans may be about ready to pull out of its tailspin to start the season though. After opening 1-11, the Pelicans won three straight games in late November, including picking up their first win of the season on the road in a 120-114 victory at Phoenix.

Both the Pelicans and Rockets don't have to look far to understand their problems in 2015-16: Defense. Both teams rank in the bottom 5 in the NBA this season thus far in scoring defense, and both teams are allowing more than 107 points per game. Last season, Houston allowed 100.5 points per game during the regular season, while the Pelicans allowed 98.6 points per game, which was the fifth best number in the Western Conference last season.

Both New Orleans and Houston have a nearly minus-7-point per game scoring differential through the first month of the NBA season, ranking in the bottom quartile of the league.

The NO Pelicans vs Houston Rockets NBA Vegas pick is offered before the teams travel to New Orleans Dec. 26 and Jan. 25, while the Pelicans will return to Houston March 2. Houston leads the all-time Pelicans-Rockets series, 25-22.
