DATE – Sunday Dec. 13

TIME – 8:30 p.m. Eastern

TV – NBC

pointspread - New England-3.5, under/over 44.5

After strong November play by the Patriots and Texans, both teams suffered tough losses in early December, meaning their Sunday Night Football meeting will be key to both teams trying to get back on track for a late season playoff qualification and playoff seeding push.

NBC will have the SNF Patriots-Texans game from NRG Stadium in Houston at 8:30 p.m. Eastern.

The Patriots will enter the New England-Houston game on its first two-game losing streak since 2012. After opening 10-0, New England lost two weeks ago at Denver in overtime, 30-24, an understandable loss against the now 10-2 Broncos. But last week’s home loss against 5-7 Philadelphia was extremely unexpected. The Patriots fell at home against the Eagles, 35-28, in their first home loss where Brady played the entire game since the 2012 playoffs.

Houston meanwhile won four straight games after a 2-5 start to put itself squarely in the race in the AFC South Division. But it took a step back last Sunday, falling at Buffalo, 30-21. The Houston defense had only allowed 35 points total in its four game win streak, but the Texans defense wasn’t up to the challenge in Buffalo.

New England’s struggles the past few weeks are reflected in its recent statistics. New England has scored at least 27 points in all but two games this season. But the Patriots two lowest offensive scoring games have come in the past three weeks in a 20-13 win against Buffalo and the loss at Denver. New England’s defense has allowed more than 23 points five times this season, but three of those games have come in the past four weeks. The Patriots are 6-2 in games decided by eight or fewer points, but the two close losses have come in the past two weeks.

Despite its recent struggles, the Patriots will enter the New England-Houston game with a commanding three-game lead in the AFC East, meaning they could clinch the division with the right set of results in Week 14. However, in the race for the #1 seed in the AFC, New England is now tied with Cincinnati and Denver, making a win in the Patriots-Texans SNF game important for the Patriots.

Meanwhile, Houston is battling Indianapolis for the lead in the AFC South, so a win against the Patriots would keep Houston in the playoff hunt, despite its 6-6 record.

New England leads the all-time Patriots-Texans series, 5-1, but the two teams have split their last two meetings in Houston.
