Detroit Lions vs Green Bay Packers Free NFL Pick

Two teams that were headed in completely opposite directions in the standings through most of the first half of the NFL season are now drifting back to the median. The Packers and Lions will play for the second time in 2 1/2 weeks on Thursday Night Football.

CBS and the NFL Network will co-broadcast the TNF Packers and Lions game from Ford Field in Detroit at 8:25 p.m. Eastern.

Green Bay opened the season 6-0 and appeared to be headed toward a showdown with Carolina for the number one seed in the NFC playoffs. However, Green Bay had an awful November, losing four of five games, including an 18-16 setback at home in the first Packers-Lions game.

Both the Packers and Lions played on Thanksgiving Day, so both teams will have had a full week of preparation for the TNF Packers-Lions game.

Detroit played one of its most complete games of the season on Thanksgiving, whipping the Eagles, 45-14. It was the third straight win for Detroit after a 1-7 start, and the win streak started with Detroit's win in the Packers-Lions game in mid-November. Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford had five touchdown passes against Philadelphia, three of which were thrown to Calvin Johnson. It was the fourth five-TD performance for Stafford during his time in the NFL.

Green Bay fell at home against Chicago on Thanksgiving, suffering its second straight home loss, 17-13. The Packers had several chances to score the winning touchdown deep in Chicago territory in the final seconds, but they could not convert.

The recent skid for Green Bay leaves it in a tight battle at the top of the NFC North with Minnesota. Detroit meanwhile remains at the bottom of the NFC North heading into the Packers-Lions game. But at 4-7 leading into Week 13, Detroit could make some noise in the race for a Wild Card spot by sweeping its final five games.

The Packers-Lions series is one of the oldest in NFL history, dating to 1930. Green Bay leads all-time 97-68-7, and the Packers have won 16 of the last 20 Packers-Lions games. But Detroit has won three of the past four, including the past two played in Detroit.
