The Lions and Saints both have had disappointing seasons, leaving them outside the playoff hunt in the last few weeks of the NFL season. But both teams have strung together sporadic strong play over the last half of the NFL season, making the Monday Night Football match a potentially interesting one.

ESPN will have the Detroit-New Orleans MNF game from the Superdome in New Orleans at 8:30 p.m. Eastern Monday.

Detroit opened the season with a 1-7 record, a huge disappointment for a team that was in the playoffs a season ago. But Detroit then put together a three-game win streak, including a stunning win at division leading Green Bay, to fuel hopes of having a playoff chance by the time the Lions-Saints game appeared on the schedule.

But the Lions lost in the rematch with Green Bay two weeks ago on a Hail Mary pass with no time left, ending their slim playoff hopes.

New Orleans was a playoff team in 2013 before stumbling to a poor record last season. Things haven’t been any better this season entering the Lions-Saints game, as New Orleans has a 5-8 record.

The Saints opened 1-4 before a three-game win streak had their fans thinking they could make a playoff push over the latter half of the NFL season. But they lost their next four games before winning at Tampa Bay last Sunday, 24-17. The previous week the Saints gave undefeated Carolina one of its toughest games before losing, 41-38, so they are playing better entering the Detroit-New Orleans MNF game.

Both the Lions and Saints have star quarterbacks who have had some uneven performances this season. New Orleans has won three of its past four games when quarterback Drew Brees throws for at least 300 yards. Meanwhile, Detroit is 2-0 this season when quarterback Matthew Stafford throws for at least 300 yards. Stafford has 24 touchdown passes and 13 interceptions this season, while Brees has 25 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

The Saints lead the all-time Detroit-New Orleans series, 12-10-1, and the Saints have won four of the past five games in the series. New Orleans has won five of the past seven in the series at home.
