Duke vs Virginia Tech NCAAF College Football Pick

Since joining the ACC, whenever Virginia Tech has needed a win to overcome some struggles, the Duke Blue Devils often have been their favorite opponent. The Hokies are in desperate need of a win this Saturday, but the Duke-Virginia Tech game features a Blue Devils team that has developed some bite.

ESPNU will televise the Duke-Virginia Tech game at 3:30 p.m. Eastern from Blacksburg Saturday.

The Hokies have lost only once in the Duke-Virginia Tech series since they joined the ACC in 2004. However, that one win for Duke came in its last trip to Blacksburg in 2013 when the Blue Devils pulled off the 13-10 upset win.

During the Hokies first eight seasons in the ACC, when they won at least 10 regular-season games each year, they dominated the Duke-Virginia Tech game, winning eight in a row. Virginia Tech was 84-24 during that eight-year span, while the Blue Devils were only 19-75. Looking at those records, its not all that surprising to see that the Hokies completely dominated the Duke-Virginia Tech games over that eight-year span.

But the tables have turned for Duke and Virginia Tech the past three-plus seasons. The Hokies are just 25-21 during that stretch, including a 3-4 mark this season, while Duke is 30-16 during the past three-plus seasons. But the Hokies still have managed to win two of the three Duke-Virginia Tech games during the past three years.

Last season, the Hokies had lost three in a row entering the Duke-Virginia Tech game and carried a 4-5 record, but they found that a match against the Blue Devils was just what they needed to return to a .500 record with a 17-16 win at Duke. The Hokies are hoping they can return to the .500 mark again this season win another win in the Duke-Virginia Tech series, but it wont be easy as the Blue Devils are 5-1 overall and undefeated in the ACC this season.

The Blue Devils had a bye the week before the Duke-Virginia Tech game, giving them a bit of extra preparation time. Virginia Tech, meanwhile, fell at Miami last Saturday, 30-20. It was the Hokies third loss in their last four games. Virginia Techs offense has sputtered during this tough four-game stretch, scoring only 93 points in the four games. The Hokies had scored 117 points in their first three games of the season. Itll be tough for the Hokies to fix their offensive woes against Dukes surprisingly stingy defense, as the Blue Devils have allowed only 56 points total in six games.
