Cleveland Cavs vs NO Pelicans Free NBA Pick

While Friday's Cavaliers-Pelicans game looks like a serious mismatch, a closer look inside the numbers shows New Orleans has a chance to pull the upset against the Eastern Conference defending champion and best team in the East thus far in the 2015-2016 season.

ESPN will televise the Cavaliers and Pelicans from New Orleans at 9:30 p.m. Eastern Friday. Cleveland rode a strong performance in November to the best record in the Eastern Conference of the NBA by the end of the month, while New Orleans is stuck near the bottom of the Western Conference after a poor November.

However, New Orleans has held its own in the Cavaliers-Pelicans series in the past few years, winning four of the past five meetings. And New Orleans managed to win at home against the Cavaliers last season, 119-114, even though LeBron James scored 41 points in his first trip to New Orleans after his return to Cleveland.

Being at home in the Cavaliers-Pelicans game should give New Orleans some confidence. The Cavaliers only won four of their first eight road games in the NBA season, while New Orleans has managed a 3-4 home record through the early portion of the NBA season, while winning only once in its first 10 road trips.

If New Orleans is to pull off the upset in the Cavaliers-Pelicans contest, it will have to find a way to shore up its shaky defense. Through the end of November, the Pelicans ranked as the NBA's worst scoring defense, allowing about 109.5 points per game. Cleveland meanwhile has one of the NBA's top five scoring offenses in the early part of the season. Cleveland also ranks in the top five in the NBA in field goal percentage at about 46.5 percent, while the Pelicans rank in the bottom five in the league in field goal percentage defense at about 46.5 percent.

Friday's Cavaliers-Pelicans game will be the first of two meetings this season between the two teams. New Orleans will travel to Cleveland for the rematch Feb. 6.

The Pelicans franchise, which includes the Hornets nickname when the franchise played in New Orleans and Oklahoma City, leads the all-time Cavaliers-Pelicans series, 15-14.
