While neither the Buccaneers nor Rams have realistic playoff hopes with three weeks to go in the NFL regular season, their Thursday Night Football game will feature two impressive offensive rookies.

The Tampa Bay-St. Louis TNF game will be a national TV broadcast on the NFL Network beginning at 8:25 p.m. Eastern.

Tampa Bay rookie quarterback Jameis Winston has shown steady improvement this season, recording eight touchdown passes and two interceptions the past four games. But Tampa Bay’s slim playoff hopes heading into the Buccaneers-Rams game were all but destroyed in a 24-17 loss at home against New Orleans last Sunday. Winston has 18 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions with five rushing touchdowns this season.

St. Louis rookie running back Todd Gurley has rushed for at least 100 yards in a game five times this season, and the Rams have won four of those games. Gurley has 975 yards rushing and eight scores this season, despite missing the first two games of the season with injury.

Even with Gurley, the St. Louis offense has struggled badly for most of the last several weeks. But after making a change at offensive coordinator a week ago, St. Louis may have an offensive boost for the Buccaneers-Rams TNF game. New offensive coordinator Rob Boras helped St. Louis defeat Detroit, 21-14, last Sunday, the Rams highest single game point total since Nov. 1. Gurley finished with 140 rushing yards and two touchdowns in the win against the Lions. When the Rams have scored at least 21 points this season, they’re 5-0, and they’re 0-8 when scoring fewer than 21 points.

Tampa Bay’s offense hasn’t exactly lit the NFL on fire this season either. Over their past seven games the Buccaneers have managed to score more than 23 points only once. Still, behind their improving defense the Buccaneers have managed to win four of those seven games. Tampa Bay has allowed just 18.2 points per game in its past five contests, after allowing 30 or more points five times in its first eight games.

The Rams lead the all-time Tampa Bay-St. Louis series, 14-8, including three straight wins during the past three seasons.
