Gambling Lingo and Sports Terms
Here at Play By Play Inc. we have compiled a list of gambling terms and lingo you may come across while wagering on sports.
Action - A sports betting wager of any kind, a bet.
Added Game - A game that was not originally in of Las Vegas regular rotation.
ATS - Short for "Against The Spread".
Bet - To risk something on the outcome of an event.
Bookie - The person who accepts the bets.
Buying Points - Pays an additional 10% for every half a point.
Chalk - The favorite.
Chalk Player - A person who always bets favorites. Circled Game - Limited wagers on a game, usually happens when there is a key injury.
Cover The Line - In sports betting this term means a pointspread win.
Dime - 1 dime = $1000, 2 dimes = $2000 ect.
Dog - The team expected to lose. Dog Player - refers to one who mostly plays the underdog. Dollar - $100 bet.
Even Money/Pickem - Neither team is a favorite or underdog.
Favorite - The team expected to win.
First Half Bets - Wagers for the 1st half of a game only.
Futures - Bets on future sporting events.
Getting Down - Making a bet.
Half Time Bet - Wagers on the outcome in the 2nd half of a game.
Handicapper - A person who studies betting trends and stats.
Hedging - A sports betting term that means placing wagers on the opposite side in order to cut losses or guarantee a minimum amount of winnings.
Hot Game/Public Play - A game that the betting public favors heavily to win.
Juice - The bookmaker's commission on a losing bet, also known as "vigorish" usually 10%.
Laying The Points - Betting the favorite by giving up points.
Limit - Maximum amount a bookmaker will allow you to bet.
Line - The current odds or point spread on a particular event.
Linemaker - The person who establishes the opening betting lines.
Lock - A game that is beleived to be a 100% guarantee, sometimes a sports bettor will say this game is a "mortal lock".
Middle - Wagering on the underdog at one point spread and the favorite at a different point spread.
Money line - A team is favored by a dollar amount not a pointspread, usually used in baseball.
Nickel - $500.00.
Odds - The likelihood of the outcome.
Off The Board - When the bookmaker will not accept a wager.
Opening Line - The earliest line posted for a particular sporting event.
Outlaw Line - Term for the earliest line in sports betting.
Over - The combined points total of two teams will be above a specified total.
Parlay - A bet with two or more teams in which all teams must win or cover for the bettor to win and receive higher payouts.
Point spread - The predicted scoring differential between two opponents.
Prop Bet - In sports gambling this is a special wager offered by the sports book. These wagers are usually in the Superbowl or non sports events.
Push - When the contest ends with no winner or loser.
Run Line - In baseball a spread used instead of the money line. Runner - A person who places bets for another. Scouts - Someone who watches team practices and any other activity.
Sportsbook - a person or company that accepts bets.
Straight Bet - A wager on just one team to win. Straight Up - Whwn an underdog wins outright.
Systems - Betting with a structured format.
Teaser - A teaser is a special type of parlay in sports betting in which you adjust the point spread or total of each individual play.
Totals Bet - The total score by both teams in a game.
Tout/Sports Service - Someone or a company who sells their sports picks.
Trends - Using past performances to predict the outcome.
Under - A bet where a team will only score so many points.
Underdog - The team expected to lose.
Vigorish - The bookmaker's commission on a losing bet, usually 10%.
Wager - To risk money on the outcome of an event.
Wise Guy - Someone perceived to be on the inside.
