Duke vs Wake Forest Pick and Preview

Duke Blue Devils (18-1) at Wake Forest Demon Deacons (16-1) - Wednesday, Jan. 28 - 7 p.m. Eastern - ESPN

Last week's #1 college basketball team hosts this week's likely #1 team in the Duke at Wake Forest contest Wednesday. ESPN will broadcast the Blue Devils-Demon Deacons game at 7 p.m. Eastern.

Duke and Wake Forest are among only eight teams in Division I basketball with one loss. No undefeated teams remain in college basketball.

Season Results: Duke made a strong case for the #1 ranking by handing Maryland its worst loss in more than 45 years, 85-44, on Saturday. Coming into the Duke-Wake Forest game, the Blue Devils will carry a 10-game winning streak.

Wake Forest, meanwhile, is still hurting from its first loss of the season in its first game as the nation's #1 team, losing at home to Virginia Tech, 78-71, last Wednesday. The Demon Deacons will have had a full week to ponder their performance when they host Duke.

Offense was the key to Wake Forest's 16-0 start to the season. The Demon Deacons scored at least 75 points in 14 of their first 16 games this season. Five times, Wake Forest has topped the 90-point mark.

On the other hand, defense has carried Duke to its impressive 18-1 record. The Blue Devils have allowed more than 60 points only six times this season, and no one has scored more than 67 points against Duke since its 81-73 loss at Michigan Dec. 6.

Duke and Wake Forest both have performed impressively against highly ranked teams this season. Wake Forest owns wins against then-#3 North Carolina, 92-89, and at then-#9 Clemson, 78-68. Duke, meanwhile, has three wins against highly ranked teams: 76-67 against then-#12 Georgetown; 76-60 at then-#10 Purdue; and 82-64 against then-#7 Xavier.

Duke leads the Atlantic Coast Conference at 5-0, one game ahead of Virginia Tech. Wake Forest is in third place at 3-1. The Blue Devils and Demon Deacons will play again Feb. 22 at Duke.

Point Spread Records: Duke has been an underdog only one time this season, winning outright easily at Purdue Dec. 2 as a 2-point underdog. In its last nine games, Duke is 5-3-1 ATS. In ACC games, Duke is 3-2 ATS. On the road this season, the Blue Devils are 2-2 ATS and 1-2 ATS as a road favorite.

Wake Forest is 5-1 ATS over its last six games, although the Demon Deacons lost outright as a 13-point home favorite last Wednesday against Virginia Tech. As an underdog this season, Wake Forest is 4-0 ATS and 4-0 outright, including a 92-89 win against North Carolina as a 6.5-point home underdog. In ACC games this season, Wake Forest is 3-1 ATS, including 0-1 ATS as a home favorite and 1-0 ATS as a home underdog.

Last season, Duke lost 86-73 at Wake Forest in the only meeting between the teams. Duke was an 8.5-point favorite in that Blue Devil-Demon Deacon meeting.
