BYU vs Texas A&M Pick and Preview

BYU Cougars (24-6) vs Texas A&M Aggies (22-8) – West Region, Glendale

BYU's strong finish to the regular season, where it won nine of 10 games, allowed the Cougars to surge into a three-way tie for the Mountain West Conference regular-season championship with Utah and New Mexico. The three teams all finished 2-2 against the others. BYU will make its third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament, but it will be seeking its first NCAA win since 1993. Three players dominate the statistics for Brigham Young. Lee Cummard, a 6-foot-7 senior, Jonathan Tavernari, a 6-6 junior, and Jimmer Fredette, a 6-2 sophomore, each average more than 31 minutes per game and more than 16 points per game. Tavernari leads BYU with 7.2 rebounds per game, while Fredette averages 4.3 assists per game. Cummard ranks second on the team in both rebounds (6.3) and assists (3.2). BYU opened the season 10-0 before dropping five of its next 10 games. However, after a 94-88 loss at Utah Jan. 27, BYU rattled off five straight wins to jump back into the race for the league championship. After a 75-74 loss at UNLV, BYU closed the regular season with four straight wins. The Cougars were 4-3 against teams in the Top 50 of the RPI, and they did not lose any games to a team outside of the Top 60 of the RPI. In non-conference games, BYU lost to Wake Forest, 94-87, and to Arizona State, 76-75. The Cougars won at Tulsa, 74-68, and defeated Utah State on a neutral court, 68-63. BEST WINS: 68-63 vs. Utah State; 63-50 vs. Utah; 69-59 at San Diego State; 73-62 vs. New Mexico. WORST LOSSES: 76-70 vs. UNLV; 75-74 at UNLV.

Texas A&M's NCAA Tournament hopes appeared to be non-existent Feb. 14, after a 72-68 loss at Baylor left the Aggies with a 3-7 Big 12 Conference record. Something clicked for the Aggies in an ESPN Big Monday blowout win, 81-66, against rival Texas, however, and the Aggies closed out the regular season with six straight wins, propelling themselves into a four-way tie for fourth in the Big 12. Despite a first-round Big 12 Tournament loss to Texas Tech, the Aggies found themselves in prime position for an at-large NCAA bid. Senior Josh Carter, one of the top 3-point shooters in Big 12 history, leads A&M with 14.1 points per game. Donald Sloan, a 6-3 junior, adds 11.7 points and 3.0 assists per game in a balanced A&M offense, as five Aggies players average 9 points per game. Texas A&M has a 4-5 record against Top 50 RPI teams. The Aggies have struggled some against lesser teams, suffering four losses against teams outside the Top 60 of the RPI. Texas A&M played a weak non-conference schedule, although it does own a win over SEC champion LSU, 72-61, and a 67-66 win against Arizona. Inside the Big 12, Texas A&M was 0-3 against powerhouses Kansas and Oklahoma, but the Aggies did close the regular season with a 96-86 win against Missouri. After opening the season 14-1, Texas A&M lost seven of its next 10 games before the six-game win streak. BEST WINS: 96-86 vs. Missouri; 76-64 vs. Oklahoma State; 72-61 vs. LSU; 81-66 vs. Texas. WORST LOSSES: 88-83 vs. Texas Tech; 65-60 vs. Kansas State; 67-56 vs. Tulsa
