Bears vs Packers week 1 Pick

NFL Week 1 , Sunday, Sept. 13th

One of the NFL's best rivalries will kick off the 2009 NFL season with the Chicago Bears at the Green Bay Packers. NBC will televise the Bears-Packers NFC North rivalry game nationally at 8:20 p.m. Eastern on Sunday, Sept. 13. The early line lists Green Bay as a 3.5-point favorite against Chicago.

Last season, the Bears and Packers split two games, with each team winning on its home field. At Lambeau Field in mid-November 2008, Green Bay blasted the Bears, 37-3. After that loss, though, the Bears won four of their next five games, including a 20-17 overtime win against Green Bay at Soldier Field in late December.

Before last season, Chicago had won four straight games at Green Bay, including two outright wins as an underdog:

2004: Bears 21, at Packers (-9) 10 2005: Bears 24 (-7), at Packers 17 2006: Bears 26 (-3.5), at Packers 0 2007: Bears 27, at Packers (-3) 20 2008: at Packers (-3.5) 37, Bears 3

The quarterback matchup in the Bears-Packers game should be especially interesting to watch. Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers, who enters his fifth season out of California, is the Packers starter for his second season of work. He threw for 4,038 yards in 2008 with 28 touchdowns versus 13 interceptions. In two starts against the Bears last season, Rodgers was 47-of-69 for 487 yards with 4 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.

Meanwhile, Jay Cutler enters his first season as the Bears starting quarterback, after arriving in Chicago in the offseason after a trade with Denver. Cutler, a fourth year pro out of Vanderbilt, was a two-year starter for the Broncos. Last season, Cutler threw for 4,526 yards with 25 touchdowns versus 18 interceptions. Cutler faced Green Bay once while he was with Denver, a 19-13 overtime loss to the Packers in 2007. Cutler was 21-of-34 for 264 yards in the game, with 1 touchdown and 0 interceptions.

Both the Bears and Packers have solid running back options, too. Green Bay's Ryan Grant, who enters his third NFL season out of Notre Dame, rushed for 1,203 yards last season with 4 touchdowns. In 2008 against Chicago, Grant had 50 rushes for 206 yards and 1 touchdown.

Matt Forte, a second-year pro out of Tulane, will attempt to build on his strong rookie season for the Bears, where he rushed for 1,238 yards and 8 touchdowns. Forte struggled a bit against the Packers last season, though, with 39 rushes for 137 yards and 1 touchdown.

In the 2009 preseason, both teams had good success. Each team was 3-1 in the preseason.
